Firstly it would be completely irresponsible to write this article without first stating that disarming or putting up a fight against an attacker that is armed with a gun is something you should never try and hopefully never you have to. However if you seek out the correct training and become very experienced in it and one day find yourself in the situation where you are absolutely sure your attacker is going to kill you or take you somewhere where the situation could be even more dangerous or deadly then and only then should you attempt to disarm a gun wielding assailant.

In the world of martial arts, one underlying question appears to stand out: is this sport or way of self defence? Some would argue that this it is both!
A sport is scored depending on how, where, and with what force an opponent is hit with some form of strike, weapon, or by use of technique to obtain a submission. A sport, for it to be entertaining to an audience, needs to allow both competitors to attack one another, and/or defend. This means that the sport can last for a period of time, and is not over in the first hit – such occurrences, if they do happen, being very rare.

These days, people talk about the “old days of martial arts” when there weren’t that many white instructors. They go on about how hard it was to learn under Oriental masters and endure requirements that would get you sued today. Thing is, as “hard as it was way back when, “I remember a black belt in karate in the 1960s telling me that the only thing you could do against a boxer was to stand back and kick.
